A Question of Semantics

More companies are beginning to learn about the semantic Web, which promises to help them achieve greater integration within their supply chains

In many ways, the Web has reached a certain level of maturity. Most of the general population has heard of the Web; many have regular access. Turning to the Web for the daily news, a passing curiosity or personal research is commonplace. However, from a business-to-business perspective, the Web is still relatively immature. Most of the information is simply text—dependent on people to read, interpret and understand. To the manufacturing business system, Web information is just gibberish.

“I believe the big trend right now in terms of integration of business systems is the movement toward the semantic Web,” says Steven Ray, division chief for the Manufacturing Systems Integration Division (MSID), a division within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). “The semantic web gives meaning to information—it makes that information formal and acceptable to a computerized system to allow truly intelligent searching.”
