By hosting everything from articles on current events, to used car listings, to scientific data, Google could be taking a step toward building the “Semantic Web” pushed by World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee and other computer scientists. The Semantic Web moves toward one that uses XML (eXtensible Markup Language) to describe the meaning of information rather than simply what it should look like on a web page.

“In the last 10 years we have seen a number of initiatives intended to make it easier to build a data-driven web site,” said Whit Andrews, vice president of research at Gartner. “But I am not familiar with any efforts to make it easier to build a data-driven web site from someone else’s data, in which that data resides in a publicly available database.”
