DC.Coverage and Mobile Search

Real local search for mobile users will not require a user-entered location from which to search, and true local search for mobile and wireline users should only return the nearest relevant results, as defined by the website or business itself, not by a third party.
Turns out, a standardized framework for this has existed for many years, but for lack of PR and attention in the developer community, it’s been overlooked. With the coming explosion in mobile content and search, we need to take another hard look at Dublin Core Meta Tags.
The DC.Coverage meta tag can be used to specify not only a point on the globe, but also more complex relationships like country, region, continent, time, etc. The Semantic Web implications are obvious. But in combination with other DC Standard Meta tags, the power of ‘normal’ search will increase exponentially. Interested consumers could use their mobile phones to find their way to your nearest location in one tap. Other customers could compare goods by price and relative distance in a few clicks or taps.
To provide the killer app for mobile – location-aware search – and precise fixed-line local search, Web Developers and Search Engines have to start working together.
